Textile Attributes

At first glance, the painting appears crowded, almost overwhelming. On closer inspection, many individual characters and destinies emerge, portrayed in great detail. „The Battle Between Carnival and Lent“ from 1559 is a painting by the Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder and depicts Dutch society in the 16th century.

For my BA project, selected figues from the painting were translated into three-dimensionality and materiality. I was particularly interested in the clothing of the individual figures, which forms the basis of my research. A person’s clothing can indicate their social class or profession. The textiles in the painting function as attributes and are intended to give the viewer clues about the person depicted. The clothing features of each person or group were chosen intuitively and reinterpreted using various technologies, including 3D printing, jacquard weaving, knitting, dying and embroidery.
