Metamorphosis

Inspired by selected stories of transformation, such as legends from Ovid‘s poem Metamorphoses as well as Franz Kafka‘s novel The Metamorphosis, my MA project explores the intrinsic life of materials whose form and structure develop and change through the technique of knitting and post-processing.

The latter includes the use of heat, water and friction, but also shaping by hand, felting and manipulation with scissors. Depending on the metamorphosis of the protagonists, concepts such as stiffening, fossilization, solidification and dissolution guided the further design process, as well as the choice of material, type of construction and post-processing. The transformation processes serve to respond to, emphasise and highlight the versatility and changeability of the materials, and by placing the textiles on the human body, not only the textiles but also the body and the skin itself undergo a further metamorphosis.
